Chefchaouen, the blue city: a practical guide

A town made for slow walking

Chefchaouen sits in the Rif mountains in northern Morocco. Its blue-washed walls, white steps and flower pots make it one of the most photographed places in the country. It is small, relaxed and best explored on foot, with no real need to rush.

When to go

  • Spring and early autumn offer pleasant temperatures and good light.
  • Summer can be busy, especially on weekends and holidays, but evenings in the mountains are cooler than on the coast.
  • Winter can be rainy and cold, so bring a warm layer, but you will find fewer visitors.

Whatever the season, expect some hills and steps, and wear comfortable shoes.

What to see and do

Wander the medina. The best plan is simply to get lost in the blue alleys. Go early in the morning or near sunset for softer light and fewer people.

Plaza Outa el-Hammam. The main square, with its kasbah and the Grand Mosque next to it. A good place for a mint tea or a simple meal.

The kasbah. A small fortress with a garden. Check the opening hours and entrance fee locally.

Ras el-Maa. The spring at the entrance of the old town, where locals gather and wash clothes, a nice glimpse of everyday life.

The Spanish Mosque viewpoint. A walk uphill that rewards you with a panorama of the town at sunset. Take water and avoid walking back in the dark.

Eating and shopping

Try local goat cheese, fresh bread, olives and simple tagines. Woven blankets, wool items and local crafts are typical souvenirs. As everywhere, ask prices first and be ready to bargain politely.

Respect and photography

Chefchaouen is a living town, not only a photo set. Ask before photographing people, do not enter private doorways or climb onto residents' steps, and keep your voice low in quiet alleys. Dress modestly as a sign of respect.

Day trips nearby

If you have an extra day, consider the natural area of Akchour, with walking trails and waterfalls. Ask locally about current trail and access conditions, and go with good shoes and enough water.

Getting to Chefchaouen

From Tangier, Tetouan, Fez or Rabat you can take a bus or a shared car. Mountain roads are curvy, so plan extra time and avoid driving them at night if you can.

Carpooling is a practical option, because public transport does not always fit your schedule. On MySeatGO, drivers publish trips between Moroccan cities and you can post a request for your date, then receive offers. Payment is in cash to the driver, and the service is free without commission. Women travellers can also look for women-only preferences when available.

Quick checklist

  • Comfortable shoes and a light jacket for the evening.
  • Small cash for cafes, taxis and stalls.
  • A charged phone and an offline map.
  • Reserve accommodation in advance on holidays.
