A small city with a big personality
Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, sits on the Atlantic coast and feels very different from Marrakech, even though the two are only a few hours apart. The pace is slower, the streets are whitewashed with blue accents, and almost everything can be done on foot. Its medina is listed by UNESCO as an example of a fortified seaport town planned in the late 18th century, and you can still feel that layout today: straight lanes, thick walls and open views toward the ocean.
The other main character is the wind. The trade winds blow most of the year, which is why the city is also a base for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and why you should pack a light jacket even in summer.
What to see in one or two days
- The ramparts and the Skala de la Ville. Walk along the old stone walls lined with cannons and watch the waves hit the rocks. It is the best place for sunset.
- The fishing port. Wooden boats painted blue, nets, seagulls and fishermen sorting the catch. Go in the morning when activity is at its peak.
- The medina. Wander without a strict plan. Look for workshops that use thuya wood, a local speciality, as well as small galleries, spice stalls and cooperatives selling argan products.
- The beach. A long, open beach starts right next to the town. It is more for walking, kite flying and horse rides than for calm swimming, as the water is fresh and the wind is steady.
- Day trips. Further south along the coast, the quieter beaches and villages are popular with surfers and people who want fewer crowds.
Eating well
Fish is the obvious choice. Many visitors choose their fish directly at the port stalls, then have it grilled nearby. Check what is fresh, agree on the price before you sit down and ask what is included. Outside the port, you will find simple tagines, soups, and cafés in the squares where locals spend long evenings.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are comfortable for most people. Summer is pleasant compared with inland cities, but it is also busy, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Winter can be mild yet grey and breezy. If a cultural festival takes place during your trip, accommodation fills quickly, so check dates and book early on the official event pages.
Getting there
From Marrakech, the road takes roughly two and a half to three hours depending on traffic and stops. From Agadir it is also a coastal drive of a similar order of magnitude, and the road from Casablanca is longer. Public buses connect Essaouira with several big cities, but schedules change often, so check them on the operator's website or at the station.
Driving yourself or sharing a ride has real advantages: the road passes through argan country, where you may want to stop for photos or a coffee, and you can adapt your departure time to your day instead of the bus timetable. Whatever option you pick, leave the medina by foot, because cars are restricted inside the old walls and parking is outside the gates.
Practical tips
- Bring a windproof layer and sunglasses.
- Keep some cash for small purchases in the souks, and negotiate politely.
- Do not leave bags visible in a parked car.
- Allow time: the charm of the city is in sitting still and watching the harbour.
- Opening times and ferry-like activities such as boat rides vary, so confirm on site.
