Why two days is enough to fall in love
Marrakech is busy, colourful and tiring in the best way. Two days will not show you everything, but they are enough to taste the medina, the gardens and the famous square at sunset. This plan keeps walking distances reasonable and leaves time for tea breaks.
Day 1: the medina and Jemaa el-Fna
Morning. Start early, before the heat and the crowds. Walk to the Koutoubia mosque and its minaret, a landmark you can see from far away. Non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, but the gardens around it are lovely and free.
Late morning. Head into the medina towards the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs. Opening hours and entrance fees change, so check them locally before you go.
Lunch. Choose a small restaurant in the medina and try a tagine or a seffa. Ask the price before you order if there is no printed menu.
Afternoon. Wander through the souks. Bargaining is part of the game: smile, start low and be ready to walk away politely. Spices, leather, lanterns and ceramics are the classic buys.
Sunset. Reach Jemaa el-Fna as the light drops. The square turns into an open-air restaurant and stage. Pick a stall that is full of locals, and keep your bag close in the crowd.
Day 2: gardens, calm and modern Marrakech
Morning. Visit the Majorelle Garden early to avoid the queues. Its blue and yellow colours are famous for a reason. Book ahead when possible.
Midday. Take a break in Gueliz, the modern district, with its cafes and bakeries. It is a good place to rest and recharge.
Afternoon. Choose one option:
- Stroll through the Menara gardens and its water basin, with the Atlas on the horizon.
- Spend time in a traditional hammam to relax tired legs.
- Visit a museum or a craft cooperative for fixed-price shopping.
Evening. Go back to the medina for a rooftop dinner, then a last mint tea on the square.
Practical tips
- Best seasons: spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summers can be very hot, so plan outdoor visits early in the morning.
- Dress: light but modest clothes are appreciated in the medina. Bring comfortable shoes, because the alleys are uneven.
- Getting lost is normal: use an offline map, and do not follow strangers who offer to "show you the way" for a fee.
- Cash: keep small notes for taxis, tips and stalls. Agree on the taxi fare before you get in, or ask for the meter.
- Water and sun: drink regularly and carry sun protection.
Getting to Marrakech
From Casablanca, Rabat or other big cities, you can take the train, the bus or share a car. Carpooling is often the most flexible option, especially if you travel in a group or with luggage, because you leave at a time that suits you and share the cost of the trip.
On MySeatGO, drivers publish their trips between Moroccan cities and passengers can also post a request for the day they want. Payment is made in cash directly to the driver, and the service is free with no commission.
