Casablanca to Marrakech: train, bus or carpool?

One route, three good options

Casablanca to Marrakech is one of the most travelled routes in Morocco. The distance is roughly 240 km, and the trip takes a few hours depending on the mode and the traffic. Each option has strengths. The best choice depends on your budget, luggage and schedule.

Option 1: the train

The ONCF train is comfortable and predictable. You travel from a station in the city centre, you can walk around, and you avoid traffic jams.

Pros

  • Fixed and generally reliable timetables.
  • Comfortable seats and space for a small bag.
  • No risk of getting stuck on the road.

Cons

  • You must adapt to the timetable and the stations, which are not always next to your final destination.
  • Tickets can sell out at peak times such as holidays and weekends. Check prices and times on the official ONCF website or app, since they change.
  • Heavy luggage is less convenient to carry between station and home.

Option 2: the bus

Several bus companies serve this route, and CTM and Supratours are well known. Buses are a classic budget-friendly choice and run at many times of the day.

Pros

  • Many departures, often with simple booking.
  • Usually the lowest fare, to verify with the company.
  • Luggage goes into the hold.

Cons

  • Journey time depends on stops and road traffic.
  • Bus stations can be busy and located away from the centre.
  • Fixed departure times limit your flexibility.

Option 3: carpooling

Sharing a car with a driver who makes the trip anyway is a flexible option. You agree on the departure place and time, and the cost of the journey is shared between passengers.

Pros

  • Flexible pickup and drop-off, sometimes from near your home.
  • Room for larger luggage, to agree with the driver beforehand.
  • A friendly trip, and often a good price.
  • You can choose preferences, such as women-only rides when available.

Cons

  • The seat depends on a driver publishing a trip on your date.
  • Departure time is set by the driver, so you need to coordinate.
  • Traffic affects the arrival time.

Which one to choose?

  • Travelling light, on a fixed schedule? The train is hard to beat.
  • Tight budget and flexible time? Compare the bus and carpool prices.
  • Group, family or lots of luggage? Carpooling is often the most practical.
  • Early morning or late evening? Check all three, because options vary by time of day.

Tips for a smooth trip

  • Book early on weekends, summer and holiday periods.
  • Keep your ID with you and check your belongings before leaving the car, bus or train.
  • Confirm meeting points in writing, and share your trip with someone you trust.
  • Keep small cash for the driver, the taxi and snacks.
