Agadir and Taghazout: beaches, surf and Paradise Valley

A sunny base on the Atlantic

Agadir is the main seaside destination of southern Morocco. The city was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1960 and was planned afresh, so it has wide avenues, a long promenade and a modern look rather than a historic medina. Its big draw is the climate: mild winters and plenty of sun, which makes it popular outside the high season too. Think of Agadir as a comfortable base, and then use it to explore the coast and the hills nearby.

In the city

  • The beach and the promenade. A wide bay of sand runs along the city front, with cafés, restaurants and a walking path that fills up in the evening.
  • The marina. A pleasant place for a stroll, a coffee or a boat outing.
  • The Kasbah hill. On the heights stand the remains of the old fortress, known for its panoramic view over the bay and the port. The ruins are what survived the earthquake of 1960, and the viewpoint is best near sunset.
  • Souk El Had. A very large market where you will find spices, household goods, clothes, olives and dried fruits. Prices are negotiable, so keep it friendly.
  • Argan products. The region is the heartland of argan, so cooperatives and shops sell oil, amlou and cosmetics. Compare a few places and check what you are buying.

Taghazout and the surf coast

Roughly a half hour north of Agadir by road, Taghazout began as a fishing village and is now one of the best known surf destinations in the country. The area has several well-known breaks and surf schools for all levels, with equipment hire and lessons. The ocean can be powerful, so beginners should choose a school, listen to the instructors and avoid risky spots.

Even if you do not surf, the coast is worth the trip. Small cafés overlook the waves, the fish is fresh, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Winter generally brings bigger swells, while summer is gentler and better suited to learning, though conditions vary from day to day.

Paradise Valley

Inland, in the Atlas foothills, Paradise Valley is a green area with rock pools, palm trees and small paths along a river bed. Many people visit it for a day, to walk, cool off and take photos. Check the weather and water level before you go, wear shoes with good grip and do not enter pools if the water is rising or the locals advise against it. Some of the nearby villages, such as Imouzzer, are known for their waterfalls and for honey stalls.

More ideas

  • The Souss-Massa area, south of the city, is known for birds and nature walks.
  • A day trip to a quieter coastal town, or a drive towards the Anti-Atlas.
  • Sunset at the port, with grilled fish.

Getting there and moving around

Agadir has an international airport, a bus station and long-distance coach services, and it is about three hours or less from Marrakech by road depending on conditions. Within the area, small taxis cover the city, while Taghazout and Paradise Valley are easier with a car or a shared ride. Always agree on the price before you start, and check current schedules on the operators' official channels.

Tips

  • Sun protection is essential, even when the breeze feels cool.
  • Respect local dress customs away from the beach.
  • Keep valuables out of sight, as in any tourist area.
  • If you surf, ask locals about currents and rocks.
