Returning to Morocco from Europe (summer / Marhaba): tips

The summer return, a big annual movement

Every summer, many Moroccans living abroad return home, often through the Strait of Gibraltar to Tangier. The yearly Marhaba operation is organised to make the crossing smoother, with extra services at ports and on arrival. Planning ahead makes your return much calmer.

Before you leave

  • Documents. Check that your passport and, if relevant, your vehicle documents are valid and complete. Verify the requirements on official sources before departure, because rules can change.
  • Booking. Reserve your ferry crossing early, since summer dates fill quickly. Compare departure ports and times on official operator websites.
  • Vehicle. If you drive, have your car checked: tyres, brakes, oil and cooling. Carry a spare wheel and basic tools.
  • Money. Bring a mix of payment methods, and keep some cash. Be aware of the rules about the amount of cash you may carry and declare, and check them officially.
  • Insurance. Make sure your car and travel insurance cover Morocco.

Crossing and arrival

Arrive at the port with time to spare. Border and police checks, and customs, can take longer in peak weeks. Keep your documents together and within reach, and follow signs and staff instructions.

Stay patient and drink water during waits. Families with children should keep snacks and entertainment handy.

On the road in Morocco

  • Respect speed limits, and watch for radar controls.
  • Do not drive tired. Stop regularly for breaks, especially after a long ferry trip and a night without sleep.
  • Avoid night driving on unfamiliar roads when possible, because of animals, pedestrians and poor lighting in some areas.
  • Check tolls and fuel stations in advance, and keep some small cash.
  • Plan stops at rest areas and keep emergency numbers saved on your phone.

Onward travel from Tangier

Not everyone drives home. If you arrive by ferry without a car, or prefer not to drive after a tiring journey, you can continue by train, bus or shared transport. Tangier is linked to Casablanca and Rabat by train, and by road to the rest of the country. Check current schedules on official channels.

Carpooling for your family trip

Carpooling is a flexible way to continue from Tangier to your city or village, especially with luggage and when public transport is full in summer. On MySeatGO, you can post a request with your date, destination and number of seats, then receive offers from drivers, or browse trips already published. Payment is in cash directly to the driver, with no commission.

Parcels and bulky luggage can also be agreed in advance with the driver. Always confirm the space before the trip.

Last checklist

  • Documents in one easy-to-reach folder.
  • Phone charged, with the offline map downloaded.
  • Water, snacks and a light blanket.
  • Emergency contacts shared with a family member.
  • A realistic schedule, with margin for waiting.
