Tangier to Casablanca: Al Boraq or the road?

One route, two good options

The link between Tangier in the north and Casablanca, the economic capital, is one of the most travelled in Morocco. Since the high-speed train Al Boraq started running in 2018, travellers have had a serious alternative to the motorway. Which one is better? It depends on your luggage, your budget, your schedule and where you actually start and finish.

Option 1: Al Boraq, the high-speed train

Al Boraq is operated by ONCF, the national railway company. It runs on a dedicated high-speed line between Tangier and Kenitra, then continues on the upgraded classic line towards Rabat and Casablanca. The journey between Tangier and Casablanca takes about two hours and ten to twenty minutes, according to the operator's published figures when the service opened. Check the current timetable on the official ONCF channels, because schedules and stops can change.

Advantages

  • Predictable travel time, not affected by traffic.
  • Comfortable seats, space for bags and the ability to work or rest.
  • Frequent departures on most days.
  • Stations are usually well connected to city centres.

Things to consider

  • Fares vary by class and by date, and popular periods such as summer, Eid and holidays can sell out. Check prices and book in advance on the official website or app.
  • You need to reach the station and then go from the arrival station to your final destination, which adds time and sometimes cost.
  • Heavy luggage, large items or a family with many bags can be harder to handle.

Option 2: The road

By car, the trip uses the motorway between Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat and Casablanca. Expect roughly three and a half to four and a half hours, depending on traffic, tolls, weather and stops. On summer weekends, around Eid or during major holidays, congestion can add a lot of time, especially near big cities and toll plazas.

Advantages

  • Door-to-door flexibility: you can be picked up and dropped off closer to where you actually need to go.
  • Easy with bulky luggage, boxes or a family.
  • Possible to stop in Rabat or elsewhere along the way.
  • Cost per person can be attractive when shared by several passengers.

Things to consider

  • The journey is longer and more tiring for the driver.
  • Traffic and roadworks can make the time unpredictable.
  • Tolls and fuel add up, which is why sharing matters.

Which should you choose?

  • Travelling alone with a small bag, to a city centre, on a tight schedule: the train is hard to beat.
  • Several people, lots of luggage or an odd departure time: a shared car can be easier and sometimes cheaper per person.
  • Staying in Rabat or a suburb of Casablanca: the road may take you closer to where you are going.
  • Sending a parcel along: a driver on the same route can help, if you agree clearly on the details.

Tips for either choice

  • Travel early or late to avoid peak traffic on holiday weekends.
  • Keep your ID with you.
  • Allow extra time to reach the station or pick-up point.
  • Charge your phone and keep the contact of the driver or the booking confirmation handy.
